Levels of CO2 and other greenhouse gases in the atmosphere increased to record levels in 2019. Climate change is affecting every country on every continent, disrupting national economies and affecting lives. Weather systems are changing, sea levels are rising, and weather events are becoming more extreme.

With the aim of lowering CO2 emissions by 55% in 2030 (compared to 1990), Spain signed an agreement last June (https://www.miteco.gob.es/es/prensa/ultimas-noticias/espa%C3%B1a-%20celebra-el-acuerdo-para-cumplir-el-objetivo-europeo-de-bajar%20%20-co2-emissions-a-55-in-2030–%20/tcm:30-542189). It is an agreement aimed at achieving the world pact to curb global warming, which establishes that in 2050 the release of Greenhouse Gases (GHG) into the atmosphere, especially CO2, must be equal to zero.

CARMOF Project (funded by H2020 Programme), in which we are involved, works in consequence to achieve the EU’s 2050 Greenhouse Gas emission reduction target. The Project (Januart 2018 – September 2022) focuses on a new process for efficient CO2 capture, building a demonstrator to capture and separate CO2 based on the use of nanomaterials combined with membranes. In addition, the project pursues the following objectives:

  • CO2 capture effectiveness: The CARMOF project is based on technologies for effective post-combustion CO2 adsorption/desorption processes. CARMOF’s proposed technology is highly intensified by using optimized structured adsorbents based on high- capacity adsorption materials in combination with highly efficient and rapid joule heating desorption and integrated cooling.
  • Close the deal: CARMOF offers pre-commercial technology validation of the VTSA pilot plant & industrial demo plants design.

CARMOF’s consortium consists of 15 partners from 9 different countries. It represents the integral value chain to ensure the marketability of the products and technologies developed in the project.

As a member of the consortium developing the project, Qi Europe is responsible for making the commercialization of CARMOF a reality. In addition, it engages in the development of exploitation strategies, not only for the end product of carbon capture, but also for all products and services related to the project.
